2007 Engineering Conference International   - posted 6/22/2007 10:19:23 AM

August 5-8, 2007
MIT - Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

ENGINEERING CELL BIOLOGY II August 5-8, 2007 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA www.engconfintl.org/7ak.html Conference Organization The conference co-chairs are Linda G. Griffith (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Massachusetts), Gargi Maheshwari (Merck and Co, USA) and Mark Powers (Cambrex Bio Science, USA). The Organizing Committee includes the conference chairs as well as Valerie Weaver (University of Pennsylavia), Anand Asthagiri (California Institute of Technology), Steve Wiley (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), Robert Hamilton (Genentech, Inc.), Peter Zandstra (University of Toronto), John Aunins (Merck & Co.), and Ronald Faris (MultiCell Technologies, Inc.). Conference Goals This conference will be a follow-up on “Engineering Cell Biology – Cells in Context” held in summer 2005. The focus of this conference is to bring the communities of cell biologists and bioengineers together to address the fusion of cell biology and engineering approaches to understand and exploit receptor-mediated cell-cell, cell-matrix, and cell-growth factor interactions. A major goal of this conference is to provide a forum for discussion of the basic cell biological and engineering principles that underlie cell interactions with their surroundings in processes such as adhesion, differentiation, motility, growth, and apoptosis. Another major focus of the conference is on how new engineering tools, both experimental and analytical, can facilitate basic mechanistic studies of cell behavior. Engineering “tools” in the experimental category include materials that control receptor ligation and physical or temporal interactions between different types of receptors or receptors and ligands; microfabricated devices that control the physical environments of the cells and allow control over cell-cell interactions, and tools for visualizing molecular interactions. A special feature of the meeting will be an interactive session featuring “tools that work” that can be transferred from the labs of engineering investigators to those of biologists. A final area of emphasis is exploitation of quantitative cell biology for commercial applications. One major application area is in the pharmaceutical industry, where cell and tissue-based assays are needed for target validation and screening compounds and other aspects of drug discovery and development. Other applications include development of human disease models, production of biological therapeutics and cell-based therapies. Attendees will be from both the Biological Engineering (Biological and Chemical Engineering) and Biomedical Engineering communities and the Cell Biology community; the conference will seek to build connections between the scientific and engineering groups pursuing related research, and will draw attendees interested in fundamental science as well as practical application. In each of the sessions, the invited speakers will define the current state of the art and suggest new and promising research directions. There will be extensive formal discussion periods in each session and informal discussions will be encouraged. Topics of focus will include: A. Parsing and engineering complex microenvironments B. Integrating cellular signals C. Model systems for biological functionality D. Technological advances in understanding cell function E. Quantitative modeling of cellular systems Confirmed Speakers Keynote Session: The Cell in Context Fiona Watt (Cancer Research UK- Cambridge Research Institute), Michael Sheetz (Columbia University) Parsing and engineering complex microenvironments Jean Schwarzbauer (Princeton University), Valerie Weaver (University of California, San Francisco), Peter Zandstra (University of Toronto), Darrell Irvine (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Jennifer Cochran (Stanford University), Jenny Lee (Centacor/J&J, Inc) Integrating signals Doug Lauffenburger (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Steve Wiley (PNNL), Melody Swartz (EPFL), Jason Haugh (North Carolina State University), Fiona Doetsch (Columbia University Medical Center), Julie Theriot (Stanford University), Gwendalyn Randolph (Mt. Sinai School of Medicine), Bart Hendriks (Pfizer, Inc.) From stimulation and perception to action -- model systems for biological functionality Dan Hammer (University of Pennsylvania), Tom Skalak (University of Virginia), Jay Debnath (University of California, San Francisco), Anand Asthagiri (California Institute of Technology), Parmjit Jat (University College, London), Celeste Nelson (Princeton University), Jean-Luc Bodmer (Merck & Co.) Submission of Abstracts for Poster Presentations Abstracts of work relevant to the session topics are invited for selection for poster presentations. The selected posters will be displayed through out the meeting to allow open discussion among the participants. Graduate students and young investigators are particularly encouraged to present posters. An evening poster session will be an integral part of the conference. A small number of abstracts may be chosen for short oral presentations. The deadline for the receipt of a one-page (250-word) abstract is May 15, 2007. The abstract must be submitted electronically. Follow the instructions given on the ECI web site: www.engconfintl.org/7ak.html Engineering Conferences International Engineering Conferences International (ECI) is a global engineering conferences program, originally established in 1962, that provides opportunities for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers and scientists from many disciplines. ECI is a not-for-profit partnership between the Engineering Conferences Foundation and Polytechnic University. The format of the conference provides morning and late afternoon or evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Poster sessions will be scheduled for discussion as well. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings, informal discussions, and/or recreation. This format is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the development of the meeting. We believe the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. Conference venue – Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technical sessions and meals will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT is a world-class educational institution. Its five schools and one college encompass 34 academic departments, divisions, and degree-granting programs, as well as numerous interdisciplinary centers, laboratories, and programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries. www.mit.edu Engineering Conferences International Six MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, New York, NY 11201 Tel: 1-718-260-3743; Fax: 1-718-260-3754 info@eci.poly.edu www.engconfintl.org

The 2007 Collagen Gordon Research Conference will be held at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH, July 22nd to 27th. The scope of the Collagen conference will continue to recognize the central roles of collagens in extracellular matrices of all organs, interactions with other matrix macromolecules and cellular constituents as well as the roles of matrix in cell function, development and pathology. The 2007 Program will include sessions on: the molecular structure and assembly of collagens; transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of expression; interactions between collagens and other extracellular matrix proteins; assembly of supramolecular aggregates and their functional interactions; genetics of collagens; processing of matrix macromolecules and turnover; cell-matrix interactions; collagen diseases and animal models; and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In all sessions, there is time allotted for speakers selected from submitted abstracts. All meeting attendees are encouraged to submit an abstract at the time of application. Early application and abstract submission will maximize consideration. The Program and online application can be found on the Gordon Conference website using the following link: http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2007&program=collagen .
